Gross pay vs. take-home pay

Everything here is gross pay — the number before federal and state taxes, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions, and health premiums come out. Take-home pay is often 25–35% lower depending on where you live and what you contribute. Knowing both matters: salaries are negotiated in gross, but budgets should be built on take-home.

How this is calculated

It converts one pay figure into its equivalents at every common pay period.

Annual pay = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year. Every other figure is that annual number divided by how many of that period fit in a year (12 months, 24 semi-monthly paychecks, and so on).

What it assumes

  • Everything is gross pay — taxes and deductions come out before you see it.
  • Hours are steady week to week, with no overtime premium.
  • The daily figure assumes your weekly hours are spread over five days.
